How long does it take to calculate the quotation for PCBA manufacturing?

Written By:Syspcb Updated: 2025-4-2

Question: Under normal circumstances, how long it will take for the quotation of PCBA processing?

Answer: we need to start from which procedures are included in PCBA manufacturing.

The quotation for PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) manufacturing usually covers the entire process cost from circuit board production to component assembly. The specific quotation composition may vary depending on factors such as order size, process complexity, and material requirements. The following are common components of a quotation:

1. PCB board cost

-Board types: FR-4, aluminum substrate, high-frequency board (such as Rogers), flexible board (FPC), etc. The material cost increases with the performance requirements.

-Thickness and number of layers of the board: The price of multi-layer boards (such as 4 or 6 layers) is higher than that of single/double-sided boards, and the thicker the thickness, the higher the cost.

-Special processes: surface treatment processes such as immersion gold, immersion silver, OSP (anti oxidation), and tin spraying, with prices typically ranging from low to high as OSP<tin spraying<immersion gold.

2. PCB manufacturing process cost

-Size and quantity: The unit price for large boards (with a larger area) and small batch orders (such as sampling) is higher, and mass production can dilute costs.

-Special requirements: impedance control (high-speed signal board), blind buried holes, high TG value (high temperature resistance), buried capacitance and resistance, etc., which will increase process complexity and cost.

1. The cost of the components themselves

-Types: resistors, capacitors, ICs (chips), inductors, connectors, etc. Imported components (such as high-end chips) are usually priced higher than domestically produced ones.

-Packaging: SMT (surface mount) packaging (such as 0402, QFP) has lower costs than DIP (direct insertion) packaging, but precision packaging (such as BGA, CSP) requires higher process requirements and may increase assembly costs.

-Procurement channels: There is a large price difference between spot goods, futures, and special customized parts, and long-term cooperative suppliers may have discounts.

2. Additional cost of components

-Scarcity: Discontinued materials, unpopular materials, and urgent stock adjustments may result in premiums or expedited fees.

-Certification requirements: The price of military grade and automotive grade components is much higher than that of commercial grade components.

1. SMT surface mount processing fee

-Number of solder joints: Charged based on the number of solder joints (or component pins), the calculation method for solder joints in dense pin ICs (such as BGA) may be more complex.

-Equipment and process: start-up and programming costs for high-speed surface mount machines (suitable for large quantities) and high-precision surface mount machines (suitable for precision packaging).

-Process steps: Do reflow soldering, wave soldering (applicable to direct insertion components), and selective soldering are required? Multiple processes will increase costs.

2. DIP plugin processing fee

-Artificial plug-in: Direct insertion components require manual soldering and are charged based on the number of pins or components, resulting in a high proportion of labor costs.

3. Testing and quality inspection expenses

-Functional testing (FCT): Use testing fixtures to test PCBA functionality, and the fixture production cost needs to be shared.

-Automatic optical inspection (AOI), X-ray inspection (X-Ray, used for hidden solder joints such as BGA): charged according to the inspection process.

-Reliability testing: High temperature aging, vibration testing, withstand voltage testing, etc., optional according to customer requirements.

-Welding materials: solder paste, red glue, solder wire, flux, etc. The amount used is calculated based on the PCB size and component density.

-Protective materials: Three proof paint (moisture-proof, dustproof, anti-corrosion) spraying, thermal conductive adhesive, encapsulation adhesive, etc., charged according to process requirements.

-Other consumables: wiping paper, cleaning agents, carriers (such as furnace trays), etc., with small costs but need to be included after batch accumulation.

-Production labor: The labor costs for processes such as SMT, plug-in, testing, and maintenance, as well as the per capita efficiency during mass production, affect the cost.

-Engineering support: PCB design file conversion, process programming, first piece debugging and other engineering service fees, with a higher proportion in the sampling stage.

-Management and overhead: Indirect costs such as factory site rent, equipment depreciation, quality control, logistics, etc. are allocated based on order proportions.

-Urgent fee: When requesting a shorter delivery time (such as delivery within 3 days), the factory may charge an urgent cost of 30% to 50%.

-Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ): Small batch orders (such as<100 pieces) may incur minimum start-up or engineering fees.

-Logistics and Packaging: Finished product transportation costs (express, air, sea), anti-static packaging, insurance fees, etc.

-Taxes and fees: Value added tax (usually 13%), import and export tariffs (for cross-border orders), etc., need to be specified according to the transaction method.

FactorsImpact on Quotation
The larger the order quantitybatch size, the lower the unit price (scale effect), and the unit price for sampling (1-10 pieces) may be 5-10 times that of the batch size.
Process complexityBGA soldering, multi-layer boards, precision mounting (such as 01005 packaging), and mixed manufacturing processes (SMT+DIP) will significantly increase costs.
Difficulty in component procurementScarce materials and long lead time components require advance stocking, which may result in inventory costs or premiums.
Quality StandardsMilitary grade and medical grade PCBAs need to meet higher reliability requirements, with more testing processes and increased costs.
Regional differencesThe cost of factories in mainland China is lower than that in Europe and America, but the quotation for high-end processes such as high-frequency boards and complex assembly may be close to international standards.

-Optimization design: reduce the number of layers in multi-layer boards, use universal packaging components, and avoid special processes (such as unnecessary gold plating).

-Centralized procurement: Bulk orders and long-term cooperative suppliers can negotiate discounts and share component inventory.

-Simplify the process: reduce DIP plug-in components, prioritize the use of SMT surface mount technology, and lower labor costs.

-Advance planning: Avoid urgent orders, reserve sufficient lead time to reduce expedited fees, and lock in long lead time components in advance.

If a specific quotation is required, it is recommended to provide PCB files (Gerber), BOM (component list), order quantity, and process requirements. The factory will issue a detailed quotation based on this information.
