2020 China SMT industry development situation

Electronic products can be divided into high value-added (automotive electronics, medical equipment, industrial control) and mass-manufactured (mobile phones, notebooks, civilian products). The electronics industry is transforming rapidly, the trend is EMS factory getting bigger and bigger, and the industrial chain is becoming more mature. Automotive electronics is a sub-field with strong stability and high technical requirements. At present, the volume of automotive electronics is not large, but there will be a good growth rate in the future. Especially now that the shift from traditional cars to new energy vehicles (pure electric or hybrid), the electronics products demand of electric vehicles will be higher, and cars will develop towards intelligence.


1. Overview of the China SMT industry

The application of China SMT started in the mid-1980s (1985). At first, SMT production lines were introduced from the United States, Japan and other countries for the production of color TV tuners. It was subsequently used in the production of pocket high-end multi-band radios, walkmans, video recorders, VCDs, DVDs, Beep Pagers, mobile phones, etc. In recent years, it has also been widely used in computers, communication equipment, medical equipment, automotive electronics, and aerospace electronics. Global electronics manufacturers, including the United States, Japan, Europe, Singapore, and Taiwan have basically moved SMT plants to mainland China, making mainland China a global electronics manufacturing and processing center.


2. The general development trend of China SMT industry

The components are getting smaller and smaller, the assembly density is getting higher and higher, and the assembly difficulty is getting bigger and bigger. In recent years, SMT has entered a new climax of development. In order to further adapt to the development of electronic equipment in the direction of short, small, light and thin, CHIP of 01005 (0.01x0.005 inches) just appeared in the past few years.


3. The situation of the China SMT pick and place machine industry

From 1985 to 2020, China's SMT industry introduced a total of 156,535 SMT machines in the 35 years, and the value of a single machine was more than 1 million RMB. In the first quarter of 2020, under the impetus of the China automotive electronics market, Mainland China imported 4,366 SMT machine with a value of USD 45,440,300. Compared with January-March 2019, they increased by 38.1% and 32.9%, respectively. The highest point in the same period since 2012.


Since the beginning of this year, the China SMT pick and place machine market has been particularly good. The possible reasons are:

1) Investment cycle;

2) Pulled by the automotive electronics industry;

3) Some EMS industries are growing up due to EMS transfer to China.

At present, the delivery lead time of China SMT pick and place machines is 4-5 months, and the fastest for old customers is 3 months.
