Using high quality or low quality FR4?

The PCB manufacturing can be achieved in a variety of base material. In order to make a PCB with tracks for the components, copper clad board is first obtained. This consists of the substrate material, typically FR4, with copper cladding normally on both sides. This copper cladding consists of a thin layer of copper sheet bonded to the board. This bonding is normally very good for FR4.

FR4 material is the best cost effective material for multilayer PCBs, compared with other based material, its reliability is also much better. However, in order to reduce the cost of PCBs, there are some companies using low quality FR4 material. The reason is that this kind of PCB manufacturer is usually small and they can not have quantities to reduce the cost, in order to survive in the market they have to reduce the cost. And for prototype, using low quality FR4 is also a very effective way to reduce the cost.

Using low quality FR4 and cheaper material seems as a good way if the PCB board's quality is acceptable, if you want to control the quality better, please think it twice before you make the final decision.
