  • Do you accept X-out board?
An X-out board refers to a printed circuit board (PCB) that has been marked as unqualified due to damage or cosmetic issues during production. Manufacturers typically distinguish these boards with obvious markings, such as black ink or an "X" shape. In paneling multiple boards together, the likelihood of X-out boards increases, which can negatively impact production efficiency. Some SMT factories refuse to accept X-out boards due to the increased scrap rate and associated costs. Consequently, PCB manufacturers prefer to minimize the number of pieces in each panel to reduce the incidence of X-out boards, as any losses are likely to be passed on to customers in the final pricing. • PCBA testing
In the assembly process, bare printed circuit boards (PCBs) are populated with electronic components using through-hole or surface-mount technology (SMT). In SMT, components are adhered to PCB pads, and their connections are secured through soldering, with welding being crucial for product quality. Boundary scan testing, particularly using the JTAG standard, allows for the verification of IC connections without physical probes. After assembly, PCBs undergo various tests, including visual inspection and in-circuit testing, to ensure functionality and compliance with JEDEC guidelines. Additional testing may include power-off and functional tests, with boards designed for ease of access to facilitate these evaluations. Rework is performed on any components that fail these tests. • IPC-9121-PCB manufacturing process troubleshooting
On May 25, 2016, IPC released the IPC-9121 standard titled "PCB Manufacturing Process Troubleshooting," a critical guide for PCB manufacturing and procurement professionals. This standard addresses up to 650 types of defects in the PCB manufacturing process, providing cause analysis and corrective actions. It also includes hundreds of full-color images to illustrate each defect. The IPC-9121 standard covers various stages of PCB production, such as imaging, solder resist coating, drilling, surface treatment, etching, and production panel layout, offering solutions to common defects encountered during these processes. By helping process engineers quickly identify and resolve defects, the standard enables cost savings and improves production efficiency, ensuring that PCB manufacturers can meet acceptable quality standards. Chris Jorgenson, IPC's director of technology transfer, highlights the value of IPC-9121 as an essential resource for PCB manufacturing engineers. Read More
  • The Future and Challenges of Printed Circuit Assembly
Quality control remains a critical concern, as defects in assembled PCBs can result in device failures, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards of reliability. Cost management poses another challenge, as manufacturers strive to balance quality with cost-effectiveness in a competitive market. Looking ahead, the future of PCA appears promising with a trend towards increased automation and smart manufacturing. Emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and accuracy of PCA processes. Read More
